iPhone Tricks

So you think you’re a smartphone expert. You know your iPhone or Android phone inside and out and you constantly help your friends and family with their mobile problems. Well, we hate to break it to you, but there are still plenty of things that even the savviest smartphone users out there don’t know about.
For example, did you know that your iPhone or Android phone has tons of secret hidden menus that you can only access by dialing special codes into the phone app?

Older cell phone users out there may remember the days of dumb phones, when a phone call to customer service would end with a rep instructing you to dial a bizarre code into your phone to update it or reset some settings.
Those days are long gone, thankfully, but those mysterious hidden codes live on.
Here are some codes you can dial into the phone app that will access hidden information and menus in the iPhone:
  • *#06# – Displays IMEI
  • *3001#12345#* + “Call” – Accesses a hidden Field Test menu
  • *#43# + “Call” – Displays call waiting status
  • *43# + “Call” – Enables call waiting
  • #43# + “Call” – Disables call waiting
  • *#21# – Displays call forwarding status
  • ##002# + “Call” – Disables all call forwarding
  • *33*pin# – Enables call barring
  • #33*pin# – Disables call barring
  • #31#phone-number + “Call” – Blocks caller ID for the current phone call
  • *3370# + “Call” – Enables “Enhanced Full Rate” and improves voice quality on GSM networks (may impact battery life)
  • *#5005*7672# + “Call” – Displays your carrier’s message center phone number
Don’t worry, Android users, there’s some great hidden stuff on your phones as well. The problem, of course, is that Android phones all differ so much based on model and manufacturer.
Here are two notable ones — the first will work on most Android phones and the second will work on all Android phones:
  • *#*#4636#*#* – Accesses a hidden test menu with sections for network, battery information and usage stats.
  • Under the “About phone” option in Settings, tap “Build number” seven times – this will enable a new “Developer options” menu in Settings that gives you access to a treasure trove of functions.

Wunderlist Apple Watch App

As you’d expect, the app is pretty simple from a functionality standpoint, given the limited screen space it has to work with. It will show you one task at a time that you’re free to dismiss once it’s completed.
Wunderlist-Apple-Watch-Views-800x531
Wunderlist explains that it’s worked to make this app as automatic and hands-free as possible so you won’t have to give it constant attention throughout your day.
“As you move through the day, you won’t even have to open Wunderlist on your Watch to get stuff done,” Wunderlist says. “Just take a look at our Glance during breakfast to review your most important to-dos for the day. Thanks to Wunderlist’s real-time notifications, a subtle tap on your wrist will let you know what your colleagues are working on during your morning commute, and remind you to pick up the milk on your way home from work.”

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Review: All Hail the New Android Smartphone Kings
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge flagship phones are finally here. They are beautiful phones (unlike the uninspired Galaxy S5). The S6 Edge, with its unique curved screen, is especially eye-catching.
But the S6 and S6 Edge have more than just good looks. Both pack powerful processors, gorgeous 5.1-inch displays, and the best smartphone cameras on the market.
Throw in a new mobile payment system that lets you use your S6 anywhere you can use a standard credit card, and the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are the new Android smartphone kings.
Handsome handsets
After years of building the smartphone equivalents of that Pontiac Aztek, the company has crafted a pair of sleek luxury sedans.
Instead of the plastic and faux metal of its previous efforts, Samsung covered both front and back of the S6 and S6 Edge with Corning’s Gorilla Glass. Sandwiched between the glass is a slick aluminum frame.
These are easily Samsung’s most attractive devices, though the standard S6 in particular isn’t exactly original, as it looks like an amalgamation of the iPhone 4s and iPhone 6, an opinion shared by the majority of the people I showed the handsets to.
image
It’s the Galaxy S6 Edge, though, with its cascading display, that is the more attractive of the two handsets. Unfortunately, the phone’s unique screen configuration makes  it a bit more prone to slipping from your hand, as there isn’t a lot of real estate for you to grip with your fingers.
Both phones’ cameras stick out from their rear panels a bit (like the iPhone 6 and 6s), which is a little disconcerting. Next to their cameras are the phones’ flashes and heart rate monitors. Both phones also have much improved fingerprint readers on the home buttons. Now, instead of swiping your finger across the reader, you just place your digit on it, similar to Apple’s Touch ID sensor.
Measuring 5.6 by 2.8 by 0.27 inches and weighing 4.9 ounces, the Galaxy S6 is a hair thinner but a bit heavier than the S6 Edge, which measures 5.6 x 2.8 x 0.28 inches and weighs 4.7 ounces.
image
For comparison, Apple’s iPhone 6, which has a smaller 4.7-inch display, measures 5.4 by 2.6 by 0.27 inches and weighs 4.6 ounces. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus not is not only taller and thicker than the S6 and S6 Edge, it weighs more too.
My one complaint about the S6 and S6 Edge’s designs is that, unlike the Galaxy S5, neither of these phones is water-resistant. You could drop your S5 in the pool, spill beer on it, or take it in the bath, and it would keep on working like nothing happened. Try the same thing with the S6 or the S6 Edge, and you’ll need to buy a new phone.
Curves ahead
The S6 and S6 Edge come with the same 5.1-inch, 2560 by 1440 Super AMOLED (Active Matrix of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) displays. They look fantastic. Colors are absolutely brilliant, and text and fine details in images are razor sharp.
image
Beyond looking futuristic, though, the S6 Edge’s curved screen doesn’t do much more than the S6’s. Like Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge, the S6 Edge gives you access to a handful of apps on either the left or right side of its display including Twitter Trends, Weather, and Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports, but only when the phone is locked.
You can also assign up to five people to get specific color codes. When they call or text the screen’s edges will glow if the the Edge is face down and locked. It’s a neat feature, and one that’s sure to be helpful in the office.
image
Besides that there isn’t much of an advantage to the S6 Edge’s curved screen. It’s plenty cool, though, and for a lot of people, including yours truly, that’s enough.
A Trimmed down OS
Samsung, like most Android phone makers, uses “overlays” on top of the basic Android operating system. Overlays are phone makers’ own twists on Android. Samsung’s previous overlay, called TouchWiz, was far too cumbersome and bloated with a litany of menus, settings, and alerts.
image
For the S6 and S6 Edge, though, Samsung has cleaned up its interface, reducing the number of menus and alerts so that you can more easily navigate the phone’s OS. Running on Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop, the newest version of TouchWiz is significantly easier to navigate and understand. Still, it’s not as straightforward as the unaltered version of Android or iOS.
In addition to the large number of settings it used to include with its phones, Samsung is known for preinstalling a litany of apps. And unfortunately that remains the case.
image
The S6 and S6 Edge come with an array of Google’s basic apps, several proprietary Samsung apps including Milk Music and Milk Video, as well as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and a variety of carrier-specific apps.
Also onboard: Microsoft’s OneDrive, OneNote, and Skype, though at least you get 100GB of free cloud storage with OneDrive.
The camera to beat
For years, Samsung has been playing catch-up with Apple when it comes to its smartphone cameras. With the new 16-megapixel cameras on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, though, Samsung has taken the lead.
image
The S6 and S6 Edge have the same camera; we used the S6 to take our test photos. In side-by-side shots, the S6 repeatedly outperformed the iPhone 6. What’s most impressive is that the S6 actually took better images than the iPhone in low-light situations, something that Samsung has struggled with for years.
image
A picture of a bottle of fruit juice taken with the S6 in a dimly lit room was far clearer and offered more vibrant and accurate colors than the iPhone 6’s image did.
A portrait of a handsome man taken with the S6 under office lights was equally colorful, while the iPhone 6’s shot was a bit too white. The iPhone, though, offered slightly more detail.
image
What’s more impressive is how much better the S6’s camera is than the S5’s. Put two images taken with the S6 and S5 side-by-side, and it’s no contest, the S6 is on a whole other level.
image
Mobile payments
Samsung is going head-to-head with Apple’s new Apple Pay mobile payment system with a payment solution of its own called, appropriately enough, Samsung Pay. Like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay will use special near-field communication (NFC) chips built into the S6 and S6 Edge that will let you pay for items at participating stores by tapping your phone on a specialized payment terminal.
The problem with NFC-based mobile payment solutions is that not many retailers use NFC-compatible payment terminals. The majority still use regular magnetic credit card scanners. And that’s where Samsung has Apple beat.
In addition to using NFC, Samsung Pay can also be used with standard magnetic card reader terminals. To do this, the S6 and S6 Edge have to be placed close to the reader. The phones then simulate the magnetic field created when you swipe your credit card through the reader.
The problem? We still haven’t seen Samsung Pay in action. In fact, we haven’t even seen what the Samsung Pay app will look like. Here’s hoping Samsung can get it up and running in relative short order after the S6 and S6 Edge are released.
Performance
The S6 and S6 Edge are absolute beasts in terms of performance. Sporting 64-bit, 8-core processors and 3GB of RAM, the handsets are more than capable of handling anything you can throw at them.
Apps, like the camera, open in an instant, and you can snap off photos without any delay. That’s a huge improvement over the S5, which lagged a bit between photos.
image
The S6 and S6 Edge each come with your choice of 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of storage. They don’t, however, come with microSD card slots. So you can’t expand their storage capacity. Instead, you’ll have to rely on cloud storage, which is where that 100GB of free Microsoft OneDrive storage comes in.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge come with large batteries that will get you at least a full day’s worth of use. Running low on juice? The S6 and S6 Edge come with Samsung’s Power Saving and Ultra Power Saving modes which cut down on the handsets’ performance in order to save battery life.
Unfortunately, to make the S6 and S6 Edge’s frames unibody, Samsung had to make the phones’ batteries non-removable, reversing something that Samsung fans have been able to hold over iPhone users for quite some time.
Wireless charging
To make up for the fact that the S6 and S6 Edge’s batteries aren’t removable, Samsung has given both phones the ability to charge wirelessly. That means, as long as you have a wireless charging station, you’ll be able to place your S6 or S6 Edge on the charging mat and let it charge without having to plug it into a wall.
image
But the only time this will be really useful is if you go to a place like Starbucks that has wireless charging pads built into its tables. Otherwise, you’ll still need to plug your own wireless charging pad into a wall.
The new smartphone king?
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the best smartphones the company has ever produced. They are gorgeous, speedy, have excellent cameras, and are bursting with helpful features. Sure, both phones look similar to the iPhone, but that doesn’t make them any less attractive.
If you’re in the market for a new Android smartphone, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are the ones to get. For what it’s worth, I’m more partial to the S6 Edge and its futuristic design, but both handsets are easily the best around and should even sway more than a few iPhone fans.

Galaxy S6 Vs iPhone 6

Beginning in two weeks on April 10th, we’re in store for an epic battle of the sixes. Apple’s iPhone 6 burst onto the scene this past September and helped Apple rack up more profit in the holiday quarter than any other company has ever earned in a three-month period. iPhone 6 sales are still going strong according to estimates, but the phone will finally see some real competition next month when the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge hit store shelves.
All three of these phones are fantastic options, but there are a few key features on Samsung’s new handsets that could make iPhone 6 owners a bit jealous. In this post, you’ll find 10 of the most impressive things the Galaxy S6 can do that Apple’s latest iPhone can’t.

1. Fast charging

Apple’s iPhone 6 is pretty quick to charge, especially if you use this terrific trick to speed up your iPhone charging. It’s nowhere near as fast as the Galaxy S6 though, which includes fast-charging technology.
In just 10 minutes, you can add hours of standby time to your Galaxy S6’s battery.

2. Wireless charging

It’s nowhere near as cool as the new wireless charging technology we saw debut at CES 2015, but Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge include built-in support for wireless charging. You can also get a free wireless charger with your purchase of the phone if you buy it from Best Buy.
If you want wireless charging on your iPhone 6, you’ll need to use this hack or buy an ugly third-party case.

3. Run more than one app at a time

Apple’s iOS platform supports multitasking, but only one app can be used at a time. With the S6 and S6 edge, you can open two apps side by side and even copy content from one and paste it in the other.

4. Wake a small part of the screen to see notifications

Samsung’s rub-to-wake gesture might be ridiculous, but it’s pretty cool that you can wake the side panel on the Galaxy S6 edge to see notifications without having to unlock or even pick up your phone.

5. See who’s calling without picking up your phone

If you have your Galaxy S6 edge face-down on your desk and one of your favorite contacts calls, the edges will glow with a specific color associated with that contact.
Here’s a GIF of the feature in action:
6. Make mobile payments anywhere
…when Samsung Pay launches.
Apple Pay is a fantastic service that couldn’t be easier to use, but it’s still not available in most stores. Samsung Pay, on the other hand, uses a hybrid technology that’s compatible with newer NFC payment terminals as well as older standard credit card terminals.
Both new Galaxy S phones support Samsung Pay, which will launch later this year.

7. Tracking auto-focus

Samsung’s new camera in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge is phenomenal, and a few features are of particular interest. One is tracking auto-focus; simply tap on an object and the Galaxy S6’s camera will constantly adjust focus as it moves, or as you move.
The feature works for still photos or while you’re recording a video.

8. Fast-opening camera

If you double-tap the Galaxy S6’s home button even while the phone is asleep, the camera will open and be ready to capture a photo in a lightning-fast 0.7 seconds.
The iPhone 6’s camera is pretty easy to open as well thanks to lock screen and Control Panel shortcuts, but it’s nowhere near as fast as the Galaxy S6.

9. Use your phone as a TV remote

iPhone 6 users can buy third-party accessories if they want to use their handset as a TV remote, or some apps include compatibility with specific set-top boxes. The Galaxy S6, however, packs in infrared blaster that can control just about any device you want.

10. Monitor your heart rate

There are apps that will use the iPhone 6’s rear camera and flash to measure your heart rate, but the dozen or so apps I have tested are slow and often inaccurate. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge pack a dedicated heart rate monitor that reads your pulse instantly and is very accurate.

Galaxy S6 Review

Smartphones are like anything else. When you pick one up it’s fresh and new, and the novelty overpowers everything else. You’re so excited to have this new gadget you’ve been waiting for that you can’t even see its flaws, serious though they may be. Then, over time, the novelty wears off and the flaws become more pronounced, gnawing at you each and every time you pick up your phone. And that’s when the complaining begins.
It has now been about a month since I first used Samsung’s new Galaxy S6… so why can’t I find anything to complain about?

First things first: the Galaxy S6 is hardly perfect, and I’m not suggesting that it is. But when it comes to real flaws — serious issues that hurt the user experience — there really isn’t much to speak of.
The Galaxy S6 is particularly interesting to me because when it comes to Samsung’s flagship smartphones, I’ve had some serious complaints in the past. In fact, my complaints were show-stoppers; design and build quality are hugely important to me, and Samsung fell well behind the pack in this regard.
With the Galaxy S6, Samsung catapults from a distant last place to the top of the heap.
BGR-Samsung-Galaxy-S6-6
Android enthusiasts have two main problems with this phone. The first is the fact that the battery is not swappable, and the second is the phone’s lack of removable storage.
Neither issue concerns me at all.
Regarding the battery, I have yet to fully test it since Samsung didn’t deliver review units until yesterday. I haven’t seen any abnormal drain in the first 24 hours though, and it looks like the battery will easily survive a full day of typical usage, on par with other flagship phones.
Samsung also included quick charging compatibility so the phone charges very fast, and there are two different power saving modes to stretch out your usage time when you need to.
Where removable storage is concerned, it’s 2015. Samsung offers up to 128GB of internal storage in the Galaxy S6, and cloud-based services are readily available. For a very small group of users, the lack of microSD card support will be a deal breaker. For most people, however, it’s not even an issue — just ask Apple.

BGR-Samsung-Galaxy-S6-4
I covered most of the basics in my first Galaxy S6 hands-on earlier this month, but there are a few things worth stressing as I prepare my full review, which should be published early next week.
First, the Galaxy S6’s display is absolutely stunning.
Forget about the quad HD resolution and forget about the pixel density. Forget everything you’ve read on spec sheets, because there are far too many factors that impact display quality that aren’t represented at all on paper.
All that matters is how the display looks when you hold it in your hand — and the Galaxy S6’s display is simply amazing.
I have never seen anything quite so impressive on a mobile phone. The clarity is crisp and clean, the colors are bold and vivid, and the brightness is intense.
It’s the best smartphone screen in the world, end of story.
BGR-Samsung-Galaxy-S6-3
Also apparent now that I’ve been able to spend some more time with the Galaxy S6 is just how powerful this smartphone really is. Seeing the benchmark test scores are one thing — the Galaxy S6 absolutely obliterated everything else on the market in my tests, managing a multi-core score of over 5,200 in several Geekbench 3 tests — but the handset’s capabilities are far more apparent in the hand.
The Galaxy S6 is ridiculously fast, and it seems almost impossible to trip up during normal usage. The new 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor, 3GB of DDR4 RAM and UFS 2.0 storage combine provide a truly fluid user experience.
I’ll have plenty more in my full Galaxy S6 review next week.
As Samsung announced Thursday morning, the new Galaxy S6 will be available for pre-order beginning this Friday, March 27th, and it will be released on April 10th.

HTC One M9 Themes

There are plenty of great features included in the HTC One M9 that will make it a competitive device throughout 2015, but one of my personal favorites doesn’t even require you to own the phone. Alongside the launch of the One M9, HTC has revealed the HTC Themes website, which allows users to design custom themes, wallpapers and ringtones for their phones.

It’s a surprisingly deep website, allowing users to upload their own images to use as background wallpapers for the lock screen, the home screen, the app screen and the Messages app. You can even change the image that appears when you place a Dot View case over your display.
If you don’t like the standard icons, there are plenty of variations to choose from within the Theme Maker, but if you prefer, you could just create and upload your own. The same is true for ringtones, notifications and alarms — HTC says that “almost any audio file” is supported.
If you’re thinking about picking up an HTC One M9, it might be worth messing around with the Theme Maker to see just how unique you can make your phone. Then when it launches in April, you can use the HTC Themes app to start customizing straight from your phone.

Email Tracking

Marketers are getting more and more crafty each day, constantly coming up with new ways to woo clients with tools they claim will increase their sales. This is obviously especially true online, where new software tools are constantly being developed with the goal of slapping companies’ messages in front of your eyeballs as quickly and efficiently as possible, and then monitoring the success of each campaign as closely as possible.
One particular tool marketers use all the time is email tracking, which helps companies measure how successful email campaigns are by automatically — and without your knowledge — tracking each time you open an email. This, of course, is a huge invasion of privacy.

Unless you have HTML disabled in your email client, it couldn’t be easier to track whether or not you open an email. The real problem is that the tracking happens behind the scenes, so you have no idea when you’re being tracked and when you’re free to open an email without having to worry about some company knowing about it instantly.
…until now.
Ugly Email is a free Chrome browser extension that works on the Gmail website, and it serves one purpose: To let you know when an email is being tracked before you open it.
Using the extension couldn’t be easier. Simply download and install it by visiting this link in your Chrome desktop browser. Click the “Add to Chrome” button and follow the on-screen instructions to install the plugin.
That’s it.
Now, while checking your email at Gmail.com, you’ll see a new icon that looks like an eye next to any emails that will be tracked the moment you open them. Here’s what the icon looks like:
Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 8.43.47 AM
If you see that icon and you don’t want to sender to know the instant you open the email, just delete the message.

Galaxy S6 Vs iPhone 6 Plus

Samsung still hasn’t announced when its hot new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge will finally be released in the United States, but our neighbors up north have already spent plenty of time with the sleek new phones. You shouldn’t be jealous of your Canadian friends, however — instead, enjoy the fact that we’re seeing some nice informative content trickle down for us to all enjoy while we wait for a stateside launch.
In this latest example, Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 has been pitted against the tried and true iPhone 6 Plus in a camera shootout for the ages.

Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus camera is easily one of the best smartphone cameras the world has ever seen. The unit’s low megapixel count compared to rivals means absolutely nothing, as we’ve seen proven time and time again. Photos captured on the 6 Plus are simply stunning.
But now, it looks like Samsung has finally shifted its focus away from merely increasing its megapixel count in the Galaxy S6, instead offering significantly improved performance from a camera with the same resolution as the one found in last year’s Galaxy S5.
So, how did Samsung do?
Canadian blog Mobile Syrup recently put the Galaxy S6’s new and improved 16-megapixel camera to the test against the iPhone 6 Plus in a massive camera shootout that covers plenty of different scenes. Outdoors, indoors, great lighting, low light… all the bases are covered in this terrific camera comparison.
And in the end, the results might shock you.
A few samples from the comparison can be seen below (click to view them at full size), and a link to the full camera shootout can be found down in our source section.

Instagram Built a Brand-New App to Make Photo Collages
If you’ve spent any time on Instagram over the last few years, you’ve almost certainly noticed the proliferation of collage pictures — even though Instagram’s default image size is rather small, users often take several photos and mash them together using third-party apps before posting them. Instagram has noticed this trend — the company says that one in five of the app’s 300 million monthly active users post collages — and it led the company to build Layout, its second standalone app, which launches today for iOS. (An Android version is due in the next few months.)
Like Hyperlapse before it, Layout is focused on making one thing as simple as possible — in this case, building photo collages that are easily exported to Instagram. As project manager John Barnett and designer Josh Dickens told me, Instagram had looked at the other photo collage apps and felt like they could make one much simpler and easier to use. As they were building Layout, Barnett and Dickens noticed that most third-party apps present the users with a big grid of potential layout designs, which forced users to figure out exactly how many pictures they wanted to include and how they wanted to arrange them as a first step.
Layout reverses that process: the first thing you’re presented with is your camera roll. From there, you can just swipe through it and start tapping pictures to add them to a new collage. Since many photo collages posted on Instagram are made up of selfies and other face-centric images, Layout has a tab designed to let you quickly see all the photos in your library that have a face in them. (Unfortunately, it misidentified a host of images as faces, like a remote control, when I tried it out. Algorithms!)
The Layout app then does the heavy lifting of actually arranging your photos for you — once you have a few images selected, you’ll see a handful of suggested grid configurations with your pictures already placed for you. You can add up to nine images, and the Instagram team says you’ll be presented with between six and 12 different layout options as you go.
That’s only the first step, though — once you’ve picked a basic grid option, Layout lets you tweak it to make it work better with the specific photos you’ve chosen. You can grab the grid lines to adjust a photo’s size, swap photos in and out of different slots, and use mirror and flip tools to create some unusual (and goofy) collages. You can also pan around each image inside of its grid square to make sure the crop shows the most important parts of the picture. Instagram played up those mirroring features heavily in the sample images it shared with us — rather than only making grids that are clearly composed of several shots, Instagram wants to see people get creative and try more abstract designs.
Once you’ve tweaked your collage, you have to save it to your camera roll — it’s a requirement, not an option. Barnett said that was because they’ve found lots of users like to make multiple versions of different collages and compare them before posting the best one to Instagram.
If you know you nailed your layout on the first try, though, Layout presents you with one-tap options to export to Facebook and Instagram; it also uses the iOS share sheet for exporting to other apps. When exporting to Instagram, Layout transfers you right to the post-camera section off the app for selecting filters and making adjustments before posting and sharing.
Layout is a determinedly simple app — choose your pictures, choose your layout, and make a few quick adjustments. That’s all it does, and its designers are happy to admit it. Even as Instagram’s flagship app has gotten more flexible, adding more granular editing tools to the filters it first became known for, the company wants to keep advanced techniques like Hyperlapse and collages in their own apps.
That strategy made sense with the Hyperlapse app — while Instagram has built out its video features over the years, the vast majority of posts are still images. Since Layout’s features are entirely focused on still images rather than videos, it might have made sense to roll these features into the main Instagram app. But while collages are increasingly popular, plenty of users aren’t making them — and those that do are already editing and making collages in other apps before porting them into Instagram. It’s probably a smart choice to make a big splash with this new app to get those users to try a new app that can fit right into the workflow they’re already using.

Galaxy S6 Edge Video Review

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge is easily one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of early 2015. In fact, it will likely be one of the hottest phones to debut all year. We’re still waiting for official word from Samsung on when the curvy new phone will be released in the United States, but rumors suggest we’re looking at a launch in early April.
As sleek and powerful as the new Galaxy S6 edge is, April really can’t get here soon enough. In the meantime, however, an early video review of the S6 edge might help Samsung fans waiting to check out the phone for themselves.

In our hands-on preview of the Galaxy S6 edge, we were blown away by the phone’s new design. Earlier Samsung phones were uninspired at best, featuring boring and bland designs, and cheap-feeling materials that didn’t do any justice to their stunning displays and cutting-edge internal components.
With the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, all that changes.
We’ll continue to discuss both models at length in our upcoming reviews, but Samsung has already seeded units to reviewers abroad and we now can enjoy a nice in-depth video review from YouTube user BeginnersTech. The video does a good job of hitting all the top-level notes, and you’ll find it embedded below.

Best Android Apps

Just about every time the tiresome Android vs. iOS debate rears its ugly head on the Internet, the argument is made that Android is better because developers have the freedom to do practically whatever they want. While there is definitely some truth to the notion that Android apps have capabilities iOS apps do not, it obviously doesn’t make Google’s mobile platform inherently better than Apple’s.
However, it does mean that there are some terrific and innovative Android apps with capabilities that iPhone and iPad uses may never get to enjoy.

Here at BGR, we have covered a number of Android apps that do nifty things the iPhone can’t. Beyond the examples we have already given, you’ll find a couple more in a new list of innovative Android apps published recently by a blog called TrendRage (via Reddit).
Some of the apps on the list fall well within the range of things the iPhone could easily do, but they’re still pretty innovative and worth checking out.
An app called Wakie tops the list, and it connects you to an anonymous stranger each morning to give you a wake up call. This social alarm is indeed an interesting concept, and don’t worry — if no one is available to call and wake you up one morning, the app will play an automated message to get you out of bed.
Next up is Smart Phone Lock, which constantly changes your phone’s lock screen PIN based on the time of the day. This is something the iPhone definitely can’t do, and it makes it nearly impossible for anyone to guess your PIN unless they know you have the app installed and they know exactly how you have it configured.
For the rest of the apps on the list, follow the link below in our source section.

Windows 10 Download Build 10041

After teasing a few days ago that it’ll roll out faster updates to Windows 10 Insiders who want faster access to the newest features even if buggy, Microsoft on Wednesday released build 10041 of the upcoming operating system, which brings several improvements and features, but also includes some issues and inconsistencies that are yet to be ironed out. Most notably, Microsoft’s newest software initiative – a completely new browser meant to make Internet Explorer only a distant, painful memory – is not included in this build. As for Cortana, that’s a different story.

Previously available only to U.S.-based Insider, the virtual assistant is also available in the U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Spain in build 10041, The Register reports.
Other new features include “a new handwriting-recognition panel for pen users, Network fly-out menu that brings quick access to network settings, enhancements to the photos app including support for RAW image format OneDrive cloud storage, and changes to the Lock screen that’ll now show tips, tricks and beautiful imagery (at least for the U.S. and France).
The company has also brought new capabilities to the Internet Explorer rendering engine, though this still is IE, and not the sleeker Spartan browser Insiders might be eager to test.
The Register notes that there are some issues with the Start menu, which is now transparent making some things harder to read, and Start menu entries can be replaced with Store URLs. Other issues concern the virtual desktop, as the Alt-Tab shortcut and taskbar only cycle and show, respectively, apps in the current desktop.
Build 10041 is included in the “Fast” category of Windows 10 updates, so if you’re currently on the more stable “Slow” lane, you’ll probably have to wait to receive a new build.
More details about this Windows 10 build, including bug fixes and known issues the company is working on, are available at the source link.

Microsoft: Stolen Copies of Windows Will Also Get Free Upgrade to Windows 10

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users this summer, but Microsoft is also extending its offer to software pirates. “We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10,” says Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows chief, in an interview with Reuters. The move means that thousands, perhaps millions, of machines will get a free copy of Windows 10 even if a license has not been properly acquired. While the Reuters report is focused on China, it’s not immediately clear if this extends to other regions, but Myerson’s “all qualified PCs” appears to suggest so. The Verge has reached out to Microsoft to clarify.
Microsoft has a long history of attempts to thwart software piracy. Windows XP was the company’s first operating system to introduce software activation to verify license keys, but it was quickly defeated using a corporate license key that many pirates shared on the internet back in 2001. Software activation has evolved throughout various versions of Windows, but pirates have largely managed to bypass it each time. While Microsoft’s plan might seem like letting software pirates go free, studies have found that in a lot of cases pirated Windows licenses are installed on new machines without customers even knowing they have an illegal copy. Microsoft has tried various methods to encourage those customers to return their machines or seek out a legal copy, but it’s headache and a bad experience of Windows itself if that’s the first thing you have to deal with in certain regions.
Windows software piracy is no small feat, so Microsoft’s move is surprising and meaningful. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed in 2011 that only one customer in every 10 is actually paying for Microsoft software in China, and he joined President Obama and other business leaders to highlight the issues. Microsoft has also continually highlighted the financial impact of software piracy, but it continues to be a problem in Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
Update March 18th, 7:40AM: article updated to note the offer could be limited to China.

iPhone Tricks

We constantly try to share great tips and tricks with our readers in an effort to help them get the most out of their gadgets. Sometimes we put our own lists of tips together, and sometimes we point out useful lists that can be found on other sites. I came across one such list this morning, but it was presented in a particularly curious way.
The post framed eight iOS and Mac features as things that people likely don’t use because they’re too subtle or are “big misses” that remind us Apple is “human” and makes mistakes. Interestingly, however, I use and love every single feature the site listed.

Re/code published the list early Wednesday morning, and it includes eight features that are spread across Apple’s iOS and OS X platforms. The site positions these eight different functions as potential Apple mistakes, and I suppose that’s possible.
You be the judge.
The list begins with “Tap to Talk,” which allows iPhone users to record and instantly send short voice messages to each other via iMessage. I probably don’t use this feature every day, but I definitely use it several times a week, typically while I’m driving. I also use it to communicate with several different friends and family members, which suggests that they use it as well.
Next up is the OS X Launchpad, which lets you open apps from within an iOS-like icon grid. I actually almost never use the dock anymore on my Mac — all of my apps are launched from either Launchpad or Alfred.
No. 3 on the list is Reachability, which really threw me for a loop. In fact, it was the impetus for this post.
Reachability is the single most important trick that every iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus user needs to know, and I use it constantly, every single day. Unless you’re in the NBA, Reachability is the only way you’ll ever be able to comfortably tap things near the top of your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus screen with one hand.
Read more about Reachability in this post.
Mac OS notifications, Passbook and AirDrop are the next three items on the list, and once again I use each feature regularly. I can’t even remember the last time I flew somewhere and didn’t use Passbook for my boarding pass, and I’m not sure how anyone can use a Mac without taking advantage of the new notification system.
I also use AirDrop all the time, especially now that my wife and I constantly exchange photos and long videos of our new puppy.
Closing out the list are Mac trackpad gestures, which are probably used to some degree by anyone and everyone with a MacBook; and saving drafts in the iOS Mail app.

Windows 10 ROM for Android

Microsoft has had a tough time in the mobile market, where it has to face both Google’s impressive market share and Apple’s best-selling iPhones at the same time. But the company is far from throwing in the towel. Instead, Microsoft is already working on making its software available to as many users as possible, and coming up with of clever new ways to fight Android.
Now, the company may have inadvertently revealed a very sneaky plot to steal market share from Google.

Instead of only pitching very affordable low- and mid-range devices that come with some impressive software bundles, the company is apparently also thinking about taking over existing Android devices. That’s right, it appears Microsoft has found a way to install Windows 10 on Android handsets, which would be an awesome way to compete against Google.
In an announcement detailing Windows 10 launch plans and partnerships in China that should help users install Windows 10 on their machines as fast as possible, the company also unveiled an unexpected partnership with Xiaomi – a company that makes only Android-based devices – which will let some power users experience Windows 10 Technical Preview on the Mi 4 flagship handset (image above).
Essentially, that means Microsoft has found a way to install a Windows 10-based ROM on Android devices, complete with its own mobile software offerings, including Cortana, Office, OneDrive, Skype and more. The company has not explained exactly how it has accomplished this and it’s not clear whether it plans to offer dual-boot Android/Windows features to users, but the concept is certainly interesting.
“As part of the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft will partner with Xiaomi to offer Windows 10 free downloads to a select group of Xiaomi Mi4 users. Xiaomi Mi4 users will get the ability to flash their phones with the new Windows 10 OS and provide feedback to Xiaomi and Microsoft on their experience,” Microsoft said in a statement. “This partnership will allow Xiaomi and Microsoft to get direct user feedback and continue to improve the experience for China. Microsoft is thrilled to see Xiaomi embracing Windows 10 and offering this great value to their customers. We’re excited to see the feedback we receive from this audience.”
As soon as Windows 10 is available on Xiaomi’s Mi 4, it’ll probably be a matter of time until developers are able to port it to other Android devices, at which point a plethora of Android devices might be able to install Microsoft’s most important mobile operating system yet.
